SO, this is a preview of the first panel to a comic I am currently working on. I came up with the concept and did the sketch for it like a year ago and never did anything with it. Since I recently was scolded by someone for not having done any new comics, I decided to resurrect "Machines Made of Meat" with a super detailed photoshop painted comic. This panel isn't even finished yet, nor are the other three, but it's going to take a bit to get done. ANYWAY enough rambling.

SO, I did this block about 6 months ago as part of a printing/show, up in Milwaukee, WI, at Redline, to which I was invited by my friend Jenie Gao . However I did it in such a short period of time, and it stressed me out so much, after I finished, I just wanted to forget about it. Anyway, I only recently got the edition finished (edition of 13 for super conceptual reasons) and just got it photographed.

So my brother graduated from college in May, and as a graduation gift for him and his roommates, one if his roommate's parents commissioned me to do a portrait of all of them. This is part of the reason my animal posts have been somewhat sporadic.

Honestly, it took me way longer than it should have, but doing portraits is not the easiest thing, let alone doing nine of them. It's also fairly big at 12"x 16". So yeah, it's done and I'm happy.

SO I finished the above linework on saturday. Had some things happen over the past couple days so I didn't get a chance to work on the color for it.

Therefore I decided to overcompensate and spend too much time on the photoshop work. There is definitely more work I could have done but not without investing WAY too much time.
Oh well. It's cuter than the first one at least. ENJOY!

Oh, almost forgot, this is inspired by the Hedgehog's dilemma (as evident by the title). Which, if you don't feel like reading the wikipedia (which you should), is the (fictitious) problem of hedgehogs trying to share heat by being near one another, but can only be so close because of their quills. You know what, it's a lot to describe and I can't do it very well, just read that shit.

Also, i colored alot of this while watching the History Channel's "Ancient Aliens". That show makes me LOL real hard.

So, I was trying to be more loose with my cross hatching, in that i just used it more for texture. Well I don't think it worked too hot, cause it just ended up looking like a shitty high school student's zine drawing, cause all the lines are too loosey goosey. Meh.

Also just drew the head...cause that's the most interesting part? Though I wish I had gone with this prep sketch I did, I kindof like it better.

Overall, kindof a fail.

However, hammerhead sharks are totally crazy. Besides their weirdo heads they are the only sharks to swim in schools and they have itty bitty mouths, compared to their bodies, and as Jun astutely observed, they basically have "Beaker mouths".
Layin' some knowledge on you dumb asses.

I made Jun add the fly to our list of animals because I really really REALLY wanted to do the Fly from the 1958 film. I also decided to make the Fly drinking coffee for Mike Pennekamp's "monsters drinking coffee" project so I could pay him back for the flamingo drawing he did for me. So I guess I'm kindof cheating but shit, I spent way too much time on this dumb thing.

The background didn't turn out quite how I would have liked but I got tired of dicking with it and didn't want to redraw the whole thing. And as you may have noticed (though I doubt it) I've been spending alot of time lately working on drawing realistic clothing and adding folds and shadows and all that good shit.

Below is the original design I did, the inking was done with brushes, which i really like, but I didn't think it looked dumb enough. So yeah.

I spent about 5 minutes on the sketch for this, then maybe an hour inking it, and then WAY too much time on it in photoshop, and in retrospect, wish I spent longer on the actual sketch. Oh wells!

I continued working with a new photoshop technique, like I did on the bull, but, obviously, more involved. I've been shading the linework in these drawings in order to make it appear smoother and more lifelike I guess. Whatever. Not like anyone cares.

Pretty simple drawing, just microns. I've been trying to add more black into my images because I feel like they have a tendency to turn out a little too gray. Was also trying to get the texture of the fur (I don't know if you call it fur or hair on a bison...) right, the results of which I feel are mixed. Meh.

I really wanted to do a drawing of these ZOMBIE BEARS!

But decided I wouldn't be able to do them justice. And actually I spent probably more time working on this character design instead of the drawing I was supposed to be doing. But who cares? I was drawing. So yeah this is a character design for a story I'm working on at the moment that will eventually be a made into a comic. Someday soon hopefully. If I don't decide that I hate drawing by the time this animal project ends.

All right I don't really have a particular problem with Earth Day itself, but it falls under the umbrella of "stupid fucking made up days of recognizing some bullshit". Seriously, I really really hate these days of memory/recognition/not-even-a-fucking-real-holiday days. WHAT THE FUCK? WHy does everything have to have a day? It's not even like your goddamn birthday (which I could giving a flying fuck about anyway) which is subjective, they are always national or god-forbid WORLD-WIDE?! days of recognition.

World Hemophilia Day was April 17th. HEMO-FUCKING-PHILIA!....DAY! Christ in heaven. Days of awareness are total bullshit. I don't care what your goddamn problem is, whether I am aware of it or not. I only care about my problems and I don't expect you to care about my problems any more than I care about yours. JESUS. Like starving people/rape victims/SLAVES/people dying need to be aware of hemophiliacs? Fuck a day where you should care about a particular issue more than another. And holidays are bullshit anyway. My argument is getting lost in my rambling because I find it so hard to fathom why any of this makes any goddamn sense that I can't form a coherent thought.

In Ancient Rome they had a shit-ton of holidays, made up days just TO FUCK OFF AND NOT CARE, which seems to be the antithesis of what we do in Modern America where we have made up days where we are SUPPOSED TO CARE. The other way round seems to make a hell of a lot more sense to me. I don't know. I may revisit this later and make it more articulate; but thinking about it now is just making me angry. SO ANYWAY,

FUCK EARTHDAY. As far as the Earth is concerned, every fucking day is earth day, just like everyday for me is Nick Day and everyday for Hemophiliacs is Hemophilia day.
